YMCA 1st XI – 2010 B&D Plate Winners
History was made yesterday as YMCA won their first knockout competition for 119 years. Matt Wells’ team beat Hanham by 6 wickets to be crowned at the Bristol & District Plate winners for 2010.
Some tight bowling from John Colley (3/8), Rich Williams (2/17) and Hitesh Shah (2/24) restricted Hanham to 96/8 off their 20 overs. There was also an inspired one-handed catch by Tom Milsom in the first over which set the tone for a solid fielding display.
In reply, YMCA reached the target in the 17th over for the loss of just four wickets. Man of the Match, Rich Williams, top scored with 32 not out and Tom Milsom contributed a brisk 23.
YMCA had previously reached the final of the B&D Plate in 1985 and 1990, and also the B&D Cup final 1964. However, the last time the club triumphed in a cup competition was way back in 1891 when the club won the Bristol Cricket Cup Challenge. Many congratulations to Wellsy and his team who, by all accounts, celebrated long and hard!
