News: GHS record fourth successive win (25/03/08)
GHS FC 3 - 2 Bideford Old Boys. By Simon Weetch, Team Captain
A gutsy and determined performance in difficult conditions ensured that Golden Hill picked up all three points with their 4th win in a row and lifts the team up to joint 5th in the table.
The home side lost the toss and the visitors decided not to take advantage of the strong wind blowing into their faces. Golden Hill got the game underway and continued where they left off last week, passing the ball round well and dictating the opening half hour of play but it was the visitors though who went ahead against the run of play, a cross, come shot from the left wing caught up in the wind and found its way into the net at the back post.
Despite the setback, GHS continued with their game and were rewarded shortly before half time with an equaliser. A quick counter attack down the right with Matt Thomas, making his full debut, finding Savvio Silva-Costa on the edge of the area and the brazilian coolly turning and slotting the ball into the net at the back post.
There was no respite from the wind in the 2nd half and playing in to the wind, Golden Hill struggled at times to get out of their own half. Again the visitors took the lead when a looping shot from the edge of the area was carried goal bound by the prevailing wind and over the helpless Phil Wilton in goal.
Playing with the wind, the visitors happy to punt long balls deep into the GHS half which were dealt with easily and provided the home chance the opportunity to get the ball down and pass their way out of danger. Just after the hour mark GHS were awarded a freekick when captain Simon Weetch was pulled down on the edge of the Bideford area. Savvio Silva-Costa stepped up and bent the ball the round the wall before a deflection ensured the keeper was left stranded as the ball headed towards the bottom corner for the equaliser.
Following his hatrick last week, Savvio completed another hatrick as the home team took the lead for the first time in the game. Lee White’s freekick found the striker unmarked in the 18 yard box and his spectacular shot on the turn caught the keeper by surprise and with little chance of saving the shot as the ball nestled in to the net.
