News: GHS beat Wessex 5-0 (28/02/09)

Golden Hill FC managed to stop their poor recent form with a convincing 5-0 away win over Wessex Wanderers, who were forced to play much of the game with ten men.

Golden Hill started the brighter of the two sides and carved out numerous chances from the off, though they created few clear-cut chances to really test the opposition goalkeeper. The game's key moment came midway through the first half when, during a goal-mouth scramble, Wessex Wanderers had a player sent off for deliberate hand-ball and the resulting penalty was confidently dispatched by Brazilian striker Savvio Silva-Costa, placing the ball in the bottom left-hand corner.

However, this only seemed to unite the home team and their remaining players seemed to increase their intensity, particularly going forward. Although the balance of play remained in Golden Hill's favour, Wessex started created chances of their own, with one particular move forcing an impressive save from goalkeeper Grant Stiddard who spread himself well when faced with a one-on-one opportunity.

The game went to half-time at 1-0 and it took a few choice words from manager Phil Wilton to reinstate focus in the team. Golden Hill imposed themselves better upon the restart and before too long they got themselves another penalty; this time a well-placed ball over the top was brought down by Silva-Costa who was tumbled over from behind when one-on-one. This time it was midfielder Nathan Matthews who took the responsibility and he produced the same result, showing similar poise in placing the ball into the bottom right corner.

This still didn't signal the end of Wessex's resilience, though it became clear that the extra man was telling and there was a certain inevitability when Golden Hill's third goal came. This time it was Captain Simon Weetch who was presented with the ball on the edge of the box and he drove it into the roof of the net for arguably the pick of the day’s goals. The game was wrapped up with two further goals with the help of two substitutes. The fourth came courtesy of a mis-hit shot by Matt Cox which was clinically headed in by Silva-Costa and the fifth was scored by Nick Hamblin who controlled a high-ball into the area and drilled it into the opposite corner to make up for an earlier glaring miss.
