News: Super sonics go goal-mad! (13/02/09)
Henleaze Sonics' Under 11s side achieved an astonishing 16-0 win over Almondsbury on Sunday. The emphatic victory means that the Golden Hill side remain in second place of their division as the season reaches its climax. The Evening Post's Dan McKimm watched the match....

Henleaze Sonics signaled their intent by striking inside the first minute as poor Almondsbury found themselves swept away in a one-sided Under 11s encounter. An attempted clearance found its way to Prevan Nayanahrajh, who finished coolly from the left side of the penalty area to open Sonics' account and, unfortunately from Almonds' viewpoint, the floodgates. Almost immediately, the same player could not believe his luck as another a poor clearance led to the left midfielder bagging his second of the game - and there were still only three minutes on the clock.
Only a fantastic piece of defending by Almondsbury's Mason Cooper, who sprinted back to clear off the line, denied Sonics a third goal - but it was only a temporary reprieve. James Steel played a one-two with Louis Harris on the edge of the area and the former made it 3-0. Harris nearly scored himself when Nayanahrajh's cross was not dealt with and he was allowed time and space for a pot at goal. His effort was spectacularly saved by Lewis Kiddle high to his right and Nayanahrajh's follow-up attempt -missed by a whisker. Sonics did not have to wait long for their fourth, however, Steel scoring from a rebound on 15 minutes after an initial shot had hit a post.

At the other end, Almondsbury's first chance of the game fell to Aiden Molyneux but his finish was disappointing. Sonics soon capitalised on Molyneux's misfortune. Harris set up Nayanahrajh on the left and he completed his hat-trick, albeit with a fairly tame effort.
Sonics continued to overrun their opponents and soon they had their sixth. James Widdicks found Harris at the back post to bag his first, having been denied by a brilliant tackle just seconds before. Widdicks was in the thick of it again moments later when his cross found Nayanahrajh, but this time his effort was disallowed because Widdicks was adjudged to have taken the ball out of play. Undeterred, Steel went on to make it 7-0 when he dribbled the ball into the area before poking it around the keeper from seven yards out. Widdicks went on to grab goals eight and nine for Sonics. He got a lucky break off the keeper before finishing for 8-0 and 30 seconds later he made it nine with an elegant lob over the advancing shot-stopper.
Sonics started the second half in the same vein with a goal just a few minutes after kick-off. This time it was Alex Wilkins who added to Almondsbury's agony when he converted a Nayanahrajh cross to make it 10-0. But the visitors did not stop there. The influential Rob Yard delivered yet another good cross that was initially missed by Steel but Widdicks was backing him up and he completed his hat-trick by tucking the ball into the corner of the net.
Goal number 12 was much like number five in that the unfortunate keeper attempted to kick the ball instead of catch it and once again completely missed it, leaving Nayanahrajh to tap in at the back post. Then a goal-line clearance from Cooper went only as far as Nayanahrajh, who made it 13-0 with an accurate finish. The score became 14-0 shortly afterwards when Harris drove the ball into the top left corner of the net.

| James Widdicks (right) - scored five well-taken goals, distributed the ball well and had a hand in most of Sonics' good play |
Widdicks went on to grab his fourth goal when he executed a precise volley from 10 yards to
make it 15-0 before somehow missing a brilliant opportunity minutes later from close range. Despite being 15-0 down, Almondsbury refused to give up. They kept working hard and their efforts were almost rewarded when Ross Porter's shot rolled tantalisingly wide after a swift counter-attack. Still Sonics were not finished, however, and Widdicks went on to become the second player to score five goals when he raced on to a delicate ball over the top of the defence before lofting it over the bemused keeper.
