News: Huszlicska - Spells danger for Bristol batsmen (June 2004)

Tony Huszlicska
Hus - reliable and deadly

Whilst opposition scorers everywhere have difficulty with the correct spelling of Anthony Huszlicska's surname, they certainly don't have trouble recalling the damage that his slow medium pace deliveries can inflict on their batting line ups.....

And thanks to his excellent start to the season, Huszlicska, one of Bristol cricket's best known characters, is celebrating a memorable milestone by taking his 100th league wicket for his adopted YMCA Third Team.

On June 19th the right-handed swing bowler took his tally to 103 league wickets as he finished with figures of 5 for 55 during a top-of-the-table clash with Chipping Sodbury CC. This leaves the Anglo-Hungarian only 21 wickets short of the current third eleven wicket-taking record held by former captain Tony Wilcox.

Setting sights on record
A delighted Huszlicska is sure to set his sights on the magic figure of 125 with great enthusiasm and pride and, as the YM approaches the halfway mark of the 2004 season, he explained to ymcacricket.com how he feels about the possibility of beating the record and what method he will adopt in the process.

"It was great to reach the 100 mark, thanks to some great catches from Shaun [Parker], Martyn Lee and Spinksy [Dave Spink] but at the end of the day the team lost so my celebrations were somewhat muted. I will continue to give 110% to the team, if it means reaching 125 this season it will be a bonus, but highly unlikely as the weather is bound to intervene. There is always next season!!"

Gerry Davis & Richard Wilson
Gerry and Richie – great believers in Huszlicska's ability

Before reaching the three figure mark, Tony offered praise for the current Third Eleven management duo of Richie Wilson and Gerry Davis by saying: "I'd like to thank Richie for believing in me, even when I get hit for a couple of fours in one over. He just says "Have another one". I'd like to stress that although it is great to reach a landmark it would mean nothing if we were losing games."

The popular ‘team player’ went on to add: "Thankfully I'm in a winning side and my wickets are down to my team-mates, not just me."
